Abstract

Perineal trauma often occurs during vaginal births, resulting in lacerations that can either happen spontaneously or due to medical interventions such as episiotomies. While most of these lacerations are typically of first- or second-degree and can be managed through suturing, severe cases, particularly obstetric anal sphincter injuries, can give rise to significant complications like pelvic floor dysfunction and incontinence and failure of proper repair can lead to fistula formation or persistent defect. Thus, it is imperative for the attending healthcare provider to possess a comprehensive understanding of identifying and mending diverse forms of perineal trauma to optimize both short-term and long-term outcomes. In instances where the primary surgeon lacks experience or is unfamiliar with the repair procedures, or if not certain of diagnosis, it is advisable for another qualified practitioner to reassess the tear. In this article we will be discussing management and prevention of Old complete perineal tear and post operative management.
