Abstract

Colpocleisis, an obliterative procedure, done for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and offers a viable option for those patients who are unable to tolerate extensive surgery and are not desirous of sexual function. Initially described in 1823, the technique has undergone modifications over time, with its current form based on Leon LeFort’s 1877 revision. Total colpocleisis entails the complete excision of vaginal mucosa, whereas partial colpocleisis retains lateral vaginal mucosa, creating tunnels to facilitate postoperative drainage and manage potential bleeding. This procedure has shown low morbidity and high success rates in correcting POP, making it an increasingly popular treatment, particularly for elderly women with medical comorbidities. Advantages include shorter operative time, minimal blood loss, quick recovery, high anatomical success and patient satisfaction remains high.
